Meet a Volunteer: Kakande Muhamad

I am Kakande Muhamad and I am a volunteer, who is running the Reallife Orphanage Home. I am a native thirty-two-year-old, who is currently caring for twenty children. Additionally, I am working with several volunteers to care for these lovely children. Some of these children have lost their parents in the war, some were abandoned, and others lost their parents to illnesses like HIV/AIDS. These children are vulnerable and need sponsors to get the daily food, and medications or school items.

Our Mission at the Orphanage

As volunteers our mission is to provide, love, support, and daily care for the vulnerable children in the slum communities near our orphanage. Our long term goal is to find each child a permanent home and someone to love them. Currently, we need sponsors that can help us keep the orphanage open, as well as help provide these children with their daily needs. We need food that will not perish like beans, maize, rice, and other foods that help nourish these precious children.

How I Began Helping These Special Kids

I was born and grew up in Bwaise neighborhood which is a slum, but during this time I saw many children die for many reasons. I have seen children thrown into water channels or drainage systems, which hurt me deeply, because these poor children died. Unfortunately, I have also seen other children living in old broken down houses and along the streets. These children would sleep wherever they could sleep and I wanted to do something to help the orphans in my own community.

After seriously soul searching, I decided to open an orphanage, which does not turn these vulnerable children and babies away. However, I need to have sponsors to help me keep the orphanage open and caring for these special children. We must pay house rent, as well as get the daily things children need like food and bathing supplies. The children’s sponsors will also help buy clothes, mosquito nets (Malaria Protection), medicine, and educational needs.

Meet Baby Hope

Orphan 1
Baby Hope ©Kakande Muhamad

This little girl is fourteen-months-old and she is known as baby Hope. She is currently living at the Reallife Home Orphanage and no one knows who her parents are. Sadly, baby Hope was found late at night and she was lying curled up next to a toilet in a Kampala, Uganda neighborhood called Bwaise. This run down neighborhood is known for prostitution and sex workers. She was alone and desperately needed help, so the volunteers brought her to the orphanage, but at this time she doesn’t have a name.

Therefore, I have chosen to call her Baby Hope and the volunteers need help with someone to sponsor this beautiful little girl. As a sponsor, you will make sure she eats daily and gets medication when she is sick. Baby Hope deserves to be happy and cared for, even though she has had a rough start to life. She is now in the care of volunteers, who want to help her live a long happy yet full life.

Meet Simon Mugerwa

This is Simon Mugerwa and he is five-year-old boy, who is one of our special orphaned children. Unfortunately, Simon lost his father in 2014 and his mother could no longer care for this handsome little boy. He is a happy little boy, who has dreams of being a doctor, so he wants to get an education. However, he needs a sponsor that can help him realize his dream, due to the required school fees.

Simon loves to play with his friends at the orphanage, he loves the volunteers, and he enjoys riding his bicycle. Additionally, he loves watching cartoons and he is a very energetic little boy, who is full of love for everyone. Currently, he needs a sponsor that can help us get him into school, as well as helping with his daily needs like food and medication. Therefore take a moment to learn more about Simon and his friend baby Hope.

Ways to Help Some Extraordinary Orphans in Kampala

The Real Life Orphanage is a place in Kampala, Uganda. The orphanage volunteers are trying to help the displaced children in their area. The orphanage needs help with donations or clothing, children toys, coloring items, sport items, and other things children love to do. The orphanage needs cash donations, in order to feed the children and to give the medical care. I have included the orphanages legal paperwork, but feel free to learn more about this special place that is mentoring children.

Sadly, these special children either have lost their parents to death or their parents just cannot care for them anymore. Fortunately, these children have a wonderful set of volunteers who have stepped in to care these amazing and resilient children. This orphanage is actually small and just starting out, so any help you can provide would help these volunteers care for these children. You can create shoe boxes full of personal hygiene items and maybe other things that may help the child thrive.

Maybe, you could get your church or your co-workers involved, by donating your children’s old clothes and small toys. The children need unsung heroes and you could be that person for them, so take a moment to see how you can help these wonderful children and volunteers. You can also help spread the word, as well as find the Real Life Orphanage Home on Facebook. If you message them, someone will answer you, eventually when they get to the computer or phone that they use to communicate.

Just seeing the pictures of these kids will tug at your heart as it has done mine. Therefore, take a moment to share this blog or see how you can help make these special children’s life better. Thank you!

Time to Have that Talk with Your Doctor!!!

medicine banner crystalMy Experience

As a cancer survivor of stage 2B cervical cancer, I have several medical conditions including type 2 diabetes. Since I was diagnosed, I have learned how important it is to take your medicine as prescribed. I am currently taking two types of medications in pill form and two types of insulin. One type of insulin, I take every time I eat something and the other I take before bedtime. Unfortunately, I have struggled in keeping my numbers down to the correct target range.

Therefore, I will be seeing an Endocrinologist or diabetes specialist, as well as learning what I can and cannot eat. I know that more exercise and portion control will help me lower my sugar level. Sometimes, I will feel shaky and sweaty, if my sugar is too low or too high. I usually test my sugar and act according to whatever my results are at the time. My other medicines make me sleepy, so I tend to take a nap every day.

Once I was given insulin, I placed a note on my mini-refrigerator to remind myself to take all of my medications. Additionally, I set alarms on my cell phone to remind me when to eat and take my insulin. However, this month, I plan to discuss all of my medications with my doctor and see if I am still on the right medications to help me. Whenever, I am worried about my health, I visit WEBMD.com or I call my doctor right away.

Advice for Diabetics

A type 1 or type 2 diabetic will have many questions for the doctor, so be sure to write down any questions that come to your mind. Take the list of questions to the doctor with you, but remember to write down side effects you may feel from your medications. Then, make a request for your doctor to send you to a nutritionist. The nutritionist can help you learn portion sizes and ways to avoid temptations that you will have each day.

Ask your doctor about the risks and benefits that you may experience with the medication, which has been prescribed to you. Make sure that you fully understand what your doctor is saying to you and ask about any drug reactions. Ask about drug reactions with over-the-counter medicines as well, like cough syrup or headache pills. This way, you avoid any unwanted reactions that can make you very sick or even kill you.

The Most Marketable Skills in Today’s Ever-Changing Job Market

My Graduation in 2011
My Graduation in 2011

As a college graduate, you may find it difficult to find a job after your graduation. However, don’t be dismayed, because there are many ways you can showcase your talents and skills that you have learned in your college courses. Becoming versatile in your field of study is the most important skill for you to have, especially once you begin your endless array of job interviews. Be sure to sell yourself to each company that you come in contact with, but don’t over exaggerate your talents and skills.

First, you must be willing to change or shift your areas of interest, if you are unable to find a job in your main area of interest. For example, maybe you are a business graduate, but you may not be able to find a job in your field of study. Second, do your homework and find other areas of interest in the business field, like helping small businesses succeed or becoming a business consultant. Next, change your resume to reflect the skills that you have to offer a future employer.

Take the time to evaluate every job in your field of interest, so you can begin narrowing your skill set. This will help you become more appealing to a potential employer, but during your interview be willing to admit things that you may not know. For example, the potential employer may need someone who knows a certain program that you have never used. After the interview is over, look for classes that you can take and learn this new skill.

Now, you will be more appealing to the next potential employer that you come in contact with. Don’t give up! No matter how many rejections you receive, instead learn something that you can take away from each interview. Once you return home, analyze the interview in your mind and write down things that you think you may have done wrong. For example, talking to fast or not selling yourself correctly, because this can hurt your chances of landing the job that you have applied for.

Before your next interview, you will know what areas you will to work on and what areas you are strong in. This will make you a better candidate for the job that you are applying for, but if the employer recommends another job with less pay. Don’t be too quick to turn the other assignment down, since you can show them how valuable you are and you may receive a promotion. Sometimes, you have to start at the bottom and work your way up; however don’t forget to continue to remain versatile.
